ikebana 2 and 3

The class that I joined had an ikebana show at Balboa Park. I thought it was kind of neat that my arrangement was going to be on display. But after I finished mine, the teacher came along and completely re-did the whole thing. It turns out she did this to every one. So I guess it was really her show.

bakeshop week 4

This was a tres leches cake. It was delicious. Luckily one of our friends had a party and we could share it with several others, otherwise it would have been hard to keep ourselves from eating the whole thing.

bakeshop - week 3

Here is the latest bakeshop cake.
Jason is on a temporary hiatus from sweets while he trains for the Carlsbad 5000, so I keep bringing these cakes home and just sticking them in the freezer. But now it is getting quite full. Anyone want a cake?

Valentine's bakeshop

I'm still not terribly impressed with the bakeshop class, but I am sticking with it. I keep telling myself that you get what you pay for, and this is a free class.
Here are the creations from last week. The white rose is made of white chocolate that was mixed with corn syrup, which somehow makes a putty that you can mold. It's the best thing I've learned in the class so far.

Sweep!

Our adventures in curling continue, and this time we recruited some teammates. We found a curling club in San Diego and convinced Kim, Michal, Kim's friend Ashley and her husband, Kabir, to come with us. Kim and Ashley opted to sit out and cheer, but the four of us had a great time and we were pretty good. We're going to try out for the Olympics -- as a Canadian/American/Indian/Polish team.
Unfortunately the club isn't going to have a spring league, but they are having some pickup games in the next few months, so hopefully we'll be able to go.
There are some photos and a lot of videos on the picasa site.

Alumni Meet 2012

My school's Alumni track meet was last weekend, and for the first time in three years I got to go. It was a beautiful day, as usual. I ran the Alumni Mile. It wasn't terribly fast, but it was competitive and a lot of fun. It was the first race I'd run in many months, and it felt great to be racing again, even if I wasn't in peak condition. Other highlights included hanging out with friends in the half-tent and meeting the new CMS track coach and having Chelsey tell her that Ryan and I are two of the most "committed" alumni. I know that she really meant "dorkiest" but was too polite to say it.
This is one of my favourite days of the year, and I hope that it won't be years until I'm back again.

There are a few more photos (and let's be honest, Dr. Ryan is really the only person who wants to see them) on the picasa page. -Chelsey

SD ikebana #1

I actually found ikebana classes in San Diego. It's part of an emeritus program, so I'm the youngest student -- by more than several years. The teacher is a very sweet little Japanese (great) grandma, and she enjoys talking to me in Japanese. It is great language practice, though I can already tell that I'm forgetting things. You know what they say, use it or lose it.
