This was a great race, with a couple of runners trying some moves during the race, a Canadian hanging with the front pack until the last lap, the hometown favourite grabbing the gold medal and a (white) American getting silver, which will hopefully quiet the people who think it's impossible to compete with the Africans.
We happened to watch the race in a sports bar in Pacific Beach as we were out for the day with Chelsey's parents and stopped there for lunch. There was water polo on the TV when we walked in. It's not often you'll go to a sports bar and catch water polo and long-distance running on the TV, so it was a good day for Chelsey and me. On the last lap of the 10km a group of people in another part of the bar started chanting "U-S-A" when Galen Rupp started to make his move. It was the most passionate I've ever seen a group of random strangers act towards distance running. Kind of fun.
